It's more a rule of thumb for translation purposes but I can try it. I need to know what the average difference in length might be between source text and translated text e.g. German is three times as long as English.

It is hard to give you exact answer. It is all depends on the meaning of sentence. I do not think it will be double, probably more like approx. the same...to estimate length of Russian sentence, your friend can go to http://translate.google.com/#en|ru|, enter English paragraph and view Russian translation.
In many cases it is very inaccurate (meaning of sentence), but it will be good enough for estimate length and amount of words.

It did! Just about 60 characters over length, so not bad at all. I'll just cut it down a bit.
