Unknown Pleasures. The life and work of Ian Curtis

Postby windgather on Thu Jul 29, 2010 7:19 am

I attended the preview of the Ian Curtis exhibition at the Heritage Centre last night and I would recommend it to anyone with an interest in either Ian / Joy Division or the music of that era.
The exhibition features a chronology of the band around the walls and items from the late 70s including original record sleeves, posters and handbills, printing plates for the record covers, set lists, vinyl singles and albums, music business memorabilia, and letters from Tony Wilson and band members to manager Rob Gretton.

One item I found really interesting is a handwritten letter from Ian where he gives a candid assesment of the album Closer written in capital letters (a characteristic of Ian's) in which he brands it as "a disaster."
The exhibition runs until the 7th August; also of interest is a specially prepared walking tour linking sites in Macclesfield with the band's history.
Beware of imitations!

I'm going on Saturday afternoon with a friend of Ian's. I can't wait to see the letter.

Very interesting stuff. Well worth the £2 entrance fee, and you get a catalogue.

And Steve Morris was arriving as we left.
